Why Everyone Goes to the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia (and What They Miss)<\/h2>\n

The Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/a> is extraordinary. We’re not suggesting you skip it. But the fact that it absorbs the majority of Barcelona’s architectural tourism means that the rest of the Modernista legacy \u2014 equally extraordinary, far less crowded, in some cases technically more interesting \u2014 goes largely unseen. In this article we will uncover some of Barcelona’s hidden Modernista architecture.<\/p>\n

Modernisme was a movement, not just a man. Antoni Gaud\u00ed was its most radical expression, but Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch were producing work of comparable ambition and beauty at the same time, often on the same streets.<\/p>\n

The Palau G\u00fcell<\/a>: Gaud\u00ed Before Anyone Knew His Name<\/h2>\n

1886. Antoni Gaud\u00ed is 34 years old. His patron, the industrialist Eusebi G\u00fcell, commissions a mansion on the lower Rambla. What Gaud\u00ed builds is unlike anything Barcelona has seen before. The Palau G\u00fcell is where Gaud\u00ed’s mature language begins to form \u2014 the parabolic arches, the extraordinary rooftop covered in trencad\u00eds mosaic, the central hall rising through the building like an inverted catenary.<\/p>\n

It sits on the edge of El Raval, five minutes from the Rambla. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it is almost always substantially less crowded than any of Gaud\u00ed’s better-known buildings.<\/p>\n

Parc G\u00fcell<\/a>: More Than the Famous Terrace<\/h2>\n

Everyone knows the terrace. What most people don’t see is the rest \u2014 the viaducts, the hypostyle hall, the wooded paths through what was originally intended to be a private housing development. The free area of the park is genuinely extraordinary and genuinely uncrowded. The viaducts, with columns made from rough stone that lean and curve like trees, are among the most ingenious structures Gaud\u00ed produced.<\/p>\n

The Other Modernistas: Dom\u00e8nech and Puig i Cadafalch<\/h2>\n

The Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana<\/a><\/h3>\n

One of the true gems of Barcelona’s Modernista architecture. Designed by Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner and completed in 1908 \u2014 the only concert hall in Europe lit entirely by natural light during the day. Every surface is covered in mosaic, sculpture, ironwork and stained glass. There is no neutral surface anywhere. It is one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Hospital de Sant Pau<\/a><\/h3>\n

Also by Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner \u2014 the most beautiful functioning medical facility ever built, now a museum you can wander freely. The complex of Modernista pavilions, set in gardens, is one of Barcelona’s finest architectural experiences and one of its least visited. It’s directly aligned with the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia: standing at the hospital and looking down the avenue to Gaud\u00ed’s cathedral is one of those moments that make Barcelona feel like a city built by people who took beauty seriously as a civic obligation.<\/p>\n

Casa Lle\u00f3 Morera and the Manzana de la Discordia<\/h3>\n

On the Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia, within a single block, stand three Modernista buildings by the movement’s three greatest architects: Gaud\u00ed’s Casa Batll\u00f3, Dom\u00e8nech’s Casa Lle\u00f3 Morera, and Puig i Cadafalch’s Casa Amatller \u2014 the Block of Discord. Most visitors photograph Casa Batll\u00f3 and walk on. Don’t.<\/p>\n
